Hands-On Experience: Separation of Mixtures at DWPS Rajkot
Promoting Experiential Learning Through Practical Science
Delhi World Public School, Rajkot, experiential learning continues to be at the heart of classroom engagement. Our young learners recently participated in an exciting Hands-on Science Activity focused on “Separation of Mixtures”, exploring real-life methods used in homes and industries.
To make learning meaningful, students were introduced to four fundamental techniques:
1) Handpicking
2) Winnowing
3) Filtration
4) Sieving
Through guided demonstrations and active participation, children understood how these traditional and scientific processes help us separate useful materials from unwanted substances.
The activity began with handpicking, where students separated small stones from pulses—an exercise that strengthened observation skills and fine motor coordination. This was followed by winnowing, where learners used air flow to separate lighter husk from heavier grains, giving them a firsthand understanding of how farmers clean grain.
The excitement continued during filtration, as students filtered muddy water using filter paper and funnels, discovering how insoluble impurities can be removed. Finally, in sieving, they used sieves of different sizes to separate sand and pebbles, reinforcing the concept of particle size.

Teachers emphasized learning by doing, helping students connect classroom science with real-life applications. The activity sparked curiosity, teamwork, and scientific thinking among the children.
DWPS Rajkot believes that such practical experiences build strong conceptual understanding and nurture lifelong learners. The “Separation of Mixtures” activity was a wonderful step in reinforcing our commitment to experiential learning and providing students with the joy of discovery.
